52 Penland Road in April

Welcome to the garden at 52 Penland Road. This feels quite exciting, and far better to be able to invite friends old and new into the garden - rather than have anyone peer in from above using Google!

By way of introduction, I should explain that 5 years ago, there was effectively no garden at this property. When we moved here in winter 2014 there was nothing but rubble and overgrown field grass - mostly sitting atop more rubble. In the first year, we hired a digger and cleared the garden so we could start with a clean canvas

It's been great fun to develop the space over the intervening years, adding first the pond and circular grass areas, hard landscaping, planting and finally the pergola. I've heard it said that 'To garden, is to believe in tomorrow' and this has never been truer than today. It will do us all good to pause, turn off the news and spend a little time enjoying our gardens. I hope you enjoy this snippet of the garden at number 52

I simply adore Tulips and love the clashing colours of vibrant oranges and pinks after the dark winter days. Avignon Parrot is just the most outrageous of oranges. I love the pinks of Negrita Parrot and Victoria Secret Parrot. Also Dolls Minuet and Ballerina Lily flowering tulips. To compliment, I throw in a dark, rich tulip - Black Hero is hard to beat

We have a long table made from scaffold boards. I keep potted arrangements on here all year long and am always thinking ahead and preparing for the next season. Currently I have Nemesia (Wisley Vanilla) and Alyssum (Oriental Nights) growing on in the greenhouse

As an unashamedly devoted Flower Girl, I have just a tiny kitchen garden. I grow peas and mange tout - mostly because scrumping peas is one of the pure joys of summer. Also salad leaves as we use so many and it's just delightful to pick them straight for the plate.

I tend to buy my tulip bulbs from Sarah Raven -  https://www.sarahraven.com. Usually her garden at Perch Hill, near Burwash is open in April. It's the best place to go and see luscious tulips in flower to help select varieties that you won't find in the garden centres. Her bulbs are more expensive but worth it for their size.

The black shed is a perfect backdrop to the vibrancy of spring. It creates synergy and enables all the colours sing out louder.

Salvia Amistad - flowering in April. 'That shouldn't be' I hear you cry! I know, it's been in the greenhouse all winter and her is the result ..... I'm not complaining

Amongst the vibrant colours I love to interject some vibrant, zingy lime green - Euphorbias and Viburnum Opulus - what could be better to arrest the vision in the sparkling spring sunshine!

Over the coming weeks, I look forward to sharing more of the garden with you. I also look forward to the opportunity to visit your garden and enjoy together the beautiful spaces that we are blessed to be able to enjoy
